RE: Towing length and license class ?

Many people apparently believe that there are only two classes of drivers licenses, commercial and non-commercial. That is not totally correct. Texas has 7 different classes of drivers licenses. Three are commercial, three are non-commercial and one is for motorcycles and mopeds. The following link will take you to the Texas site where you can read about Texas driver license laws. Texas goes by the weight of the vehicles, not by length. Link Chapter 521 is for non-commercial vehicles and Chapter 522 is for commercial vehicles. Class A non-commercial license is discussed in Sec 521.081, Class B in 521.082 and Class C in 521.083.

RE: A what would you do ?

The following link will take you to the Ford website where you can look up the owners manuals for all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles going back several years. Page 181 says you cannot tow the 500 four down.Ford owner manuals.

RE: Ford Motor Dinghy Towing

Hi. I don't believe that this is the Ford site. It IS about ford vehicles, but it looks more like the Motor Home Magazine towing guide. Ford says it CANNOT be towed. Only the Edge and Escape can be towed. Not according to the Ford web site. Ford towing guide. Look at the URL. It says fleet.ford.com It is a ford website.

RE: Towing with a 1997 Chevy Malibu??? No way right?

I had a 1990 Sable and had to tow U-Haul trailers to take our sons to and from college. I know that on at lease one occasion I had more weight that the car was rated to tow. (2,000 lbs) We bought a 1995 Olds Cutlass. Same size car, same size engine, more horsepower. What I didn't know was that it was only rated to tow 1,000 lbs. Burned up the transmission. Everyone has been talking about horsepower and safety, etc, and no one has addressed the possibility of burning up the transmission. If you look at the Freightliner web-site for the FRED, they state that towing is limited my the transmission, not horsepower. In that situation, 30,000 lbs maximum.

RE: Daylight running lights

GM's version of DRL was downright dangerous for someone who happened to rent one but didn't own one. I rented a Cavalier in Wichita some years back, picking it up at the airport after dark. When I turned the key on, the headlights came on as did the panel lights. I drove to my hotel across town (about 15 miles), then out for dinner. The next morning I was astonished to see a small decal on the instrument panel glass that informed the driver that the DRL system didn't turn the tail lights on. The decal was clear with white lettering and wasn't visible at night when the instrument lights were on. I really hate "nanny" stuff like that, particularly when it's poorly implemented with no thought for the effects of failures. Automatic locking the doors is another pet peeve - again GM did a crappy job by not unlocking them when you stop. With OnStar, it quits working if you quit paying the subscription! For a few years now, auto makers have been making satellite radio a basic installation. What can you do if you got the system that has gone out of business? I have a Chevy with DRL's. This post only applies to cars, as I believe that the system on pickups and SUVs is different. There is a light sensor that reads the ambient light. When the sensor reads a certain level, it will turn the headlights on with only 6 volts going thru the 12 volt bulbs. Think of a flashlight when the batteries are low. Instead of a bright white light, there is a soft amber light. That is the Chevy DRL during daylight. At this point only the headlights are on, not the dashlights and not the tail lights. When the sensor reads the the light level is too low, it will automatically turn the headlights on to full intensity, turn the dash lights on and turn the tail lights on. Since your dash lights were on, your tail lights were on also, unless both bulbs were burned out. The decal is on the car probably because customers were complaining that the light were not working. There were working as designed. If you prefer that your tail lights are on, simply reach down and turn the headlight switch on. When it is raining, I will turn the headlights on manually to be sure that my taillights are on. If you drive a Chevy with DRLs into a parking garage that is not well lit in the daytime, you will hear a click, you will observe that the headlights are shining brighter, the dashlights have come on and you can be sure that the taillights are on unless they are burned out. I wish that the taillights would come on all the time, but they don't. The DRL's on your rental were working properly. As far as the locking doors is concerned, on my Chevy, when you put the car in any gear the doors lock. Take the out of gear and the doors unlock. I don't see a problem here. Which satelite radio has gone out of busineess? They merged, but you subscription will still work.

RE: Class B drivers license – Texas UPDATED

A class "B" is a commercial drivers license for straight trucks or bus with air brakes. Texas has both Commercial and non-commercial Class A, B, and C. Non-commercial Class B is the correct license for non-commercial (RV's) with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, providing you are not towing more than 10,000 pounds.
